Community shortcuts
Diwali is the one festival almost every Indian family in Nashville marks on the calendar months ahead, and 2026 is no different. Whether you grew up lighting diyas on the balcony back home or you are introducing the Festival of Lights to your kids for the first time in Tennessee, this guide covers everything you need - the dates, where the community celebrates, which temples hold puja, and where to pick up sweets and diyas before they sell out.
When is Diwali 2026?
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026, with Lakshmi Puja observed that evening. Like most Hindu festivals, the exact date follows the lunar calendar, so a few families and temples may observe it a day either side depending on their panchang - always worth confirming with your own temple.
Diwali is really a five-day festival, and each day has its own meaning:
| Day | Date (2026) | What it marks |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday, Nov 6 | Buying gold, utensils, and new things for the home |
| Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) | Saturday, Nov 7 | Early morning oil bath, lighting the first diyas |
| Diwali / Lakshmi Puja | Sunday, Nov 8 | The main day - Lakshmi Puja, diyas, fireworks, sweets |
| Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Monday, Nov 9 | Annakut offerings, especially at Swaminarayan temples |
| Bhai Dooj | Tuesday, Nov 10 | Celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters |
Because November 8 lands on a Sunday, expect most community events to cluster around the weekends of November 7-8 and November 14-15, when families are off work and temples host their biggest gatherings.

Gifts & New Clothes
Dhanteras is the traditional day for buying something new. Families pick up gold and silver, new clothes, and gifts for relatives. Indian clothing boutiques and jewelers in the area advertise their Diwali collections through October - browse the NashDesi directory for local shops.
Hosting Your Own Diwali at Home
Not everyone can make it to a big event, and house parties are where a lot of the real celebration happens. If you are hosting:
The Essentials
- Diyas and lights - line the entrance, balcony, and windows
- Rangoli - a simple design at the doorway; store-bought stencils make it easy
- Lakshmi Puja setup - photo or murti of Lakshmi and Ganesh, kalash, flowers, and prasad
- Sweets and snacks - a mix of mithai and savory (namkeen, chakli, mathri)
- Music - a good playlist of bhajans early, then Bollywood later
A Simple Diwali Evening Timeline
- Late afternoon: finish rangoli, arrange diyas, set up the puja space
- Around sunset: light the first diyas together
- Evening: Lakshmi Puja and aarti with family
- After puja: dinner, sweets, and gifts
- Later: join neighbors outside for lights (see fireworks note below)
Diwali with Kids
Diwali is a wonderful way to pass traditions to kids growing up here:
- Let them decorate diyas with paint and glitter
- Teach the Ramayana story behind the festival
- Do a family rangoli together
- Give them a small role in the puja
- Non-Indian friends and classmates love being invited - it is a natural way to share the culture
Fireworks: Know the Local Rules
This trips up a lot of newcomers. Consumer fireworks are restricted within Metro Nashville-Davidson County city limits - you cannot legally set them off in most of the city. Rules differ in surrounding counties (Rutherford, Williamson, Wilson), so what is allowed at a friend's house in Murfreesboro may not be allowed in Nashville.
Safer options:
- Use electric or LED diyas and string lights for the display
- Attend a community event where any pyrotechnics are handled by organizers
- If you are outside city limits, check that county's rules and use sparklers responsibly with kids supervised
When in doubt, skip the fireworks - the diyas are what make Diwali beautiful anyway.
